6 Home Decor Finds You Should Buy Secondhand
From antique markets to garage sales, secondhand home finds are an instant way to add character and charm to your decor.
As most designers will tell you, pre-loved pieces have a certain 'je-ne-sais-quoi.' Mirrors are more ornate, furniture is sturdier, and, best of all, your design will be speckled with unique finds that no one else has.
Here’s what you should pick up the next time you hit a secondhand shop.
1. Art

The best homegrown art collections are a mix of fresh prints and old works. Vintage or antique shops are great places to find beautiful paintings and drawings, from classic designs to geometric pops of colour.
2. Mirrors

Traditional design styles typically gravitate towards more ornate mirrors. Rather than picking up a cheap replica, look for high-quality, brass-framed pieces at secondhand stores. These vintage finds will likely only require a little cleaning.
3. Chairs

Need some new dining chairs or an accent seat for your living room? Thrifted chairs are unique, cool, and instantly add interest to your decor.
4. Lamp bases

We’re the first to say that vintage lamps are inherently cool. While lamp shades don’t always age well—the fabric is prone to yellowing and tears—bases come in an array of shapes, sizes, and colours. Simply replace the shade with a fresh one, and your lamp is ready to shine.
5. Dining table

A well-made dining table is another foolproof secondhand find. Either use it as is, or zhuzh it up with a new coat of paint.
6. Hutch or display case

Hutches, display cases, coffee tables—any sort of bulky wood furniture is a go at a garage sale. Not only are these pieces more one-of-a-kind, you can easily update them and incorporate them into your design.
Don't disregard funky bar carts or glass shelving. These pieces are almost certainly vintage and will make your decor look more expensive.
