How To Add Nostalgia To Your Home
Comfort and warmth are at the heart of this latest design trend.
From nostalgia-core to granny chic, maximalist design is back in a big way. These trends—some of which we thought were gone for good—look to the past for a healthy dose of charm.
Once-forgotten colours, textures, and materials not only have us rethinking our home styles, they also point to our own personal histories. Think of the decor and pieces that ran rampant in your grandmother’s home, or old-fashioned kitchenware that evokes memories of holidays past.
Here’s how to copy this playful trend and celebrate the decor that brings you joy.
1. Welcome in layers

By definition, nostalgia is about comfort. Load up on pillows, throws, and extra layers on your beds. Not only does this create a multi-dimensional design, the departure from modern-day minimalism is a cozy nod to the past.
2. Lean into timeless pieces

A design that stands the test of time is inherently nostalgic. Bring in sturdy, well-made furniture with a blend of clean and soft lines. Certain shapes—think, rounded table legs or deep upholstered couches—are reminiscent of the past. Mixing them with new and modern pieces will keep your design from looking dated.
3. Frills and ruffles

Ruffles are back in a big way. From cutesy pillows to frilly bed frames, you can incorporate this once-loved trend as much or as little as you want.
4. Play up heirlooms and antiques

If design nostalgia conjures up sweet memories of your grandma’s house or trinkets lining a hutch in your childhood home, why not replicate the style in your own home? Swap out your store-bought throw for a handmade version, hang a relative’s art on the wall, or breathe new life into old wood furniture with a fresh paint job.
5. Old-timely colour and patterns

We’re seeing a resurgence in once-trendy hues and patterns that used to populate our homes. From retro mustard yellows and orange-reds to muted pinks, breaking free from traditional whites and beiges infuses an encompassing blast from the past.
The same rule applies to patterns. Invite classic patterns like stripes and gingham onto your pillows and throws, wallpaper, and even furniture upholstery. Juxtaposing different patterns is a great way to play up the retro vibes.
6. Retro appliances

Make a bold statement by bringing old-fashioned kitchenware into your home. Colourful and rounded appliances are at the centre of this idea, such as Smeg’s classic styles.
