We love a good lamp. They add mood lighting, sophistication, and personality to any space. What we don’t love about them? How easy it is to guess how much it costs. 

Whether you want to repurpose a fixture you already have (perhaps that one Ikea lamp everyone has owned once in their life?) or simply add some pizzaz to an affordable pick, here’s a simple two-step hack to give your flimsy lamp a second life.

Step one: the base 

Affordable standing lamps often come in two shades: black and white. If that fits with your home’s aesthetic, keep it! For a more unique flair, spray paint the base of the lamp with a metal-safe paint. Gold or silver are good options, or branch out to a more vibrant hue.

Step two: the shade

Begone, coup-shaped shade! To make the top of your standing lamp look more expensive, you’re going to head over to a local antique market or home goods store to pick up a shade. Lamp shades are easy to source at second-hand stores and are often good quality. 

Finally, place the shade over the top of the lamp, where it should sit naturally. Et voilà! Your very own high-end lamp—without the price tag.
