Is Sage Green The New Millennial Grey?

Move aside millennial grey—a new generational trend is taking over.

It’s natural for specific home trends to be associated with the generations that popularized them. Think, Boomers’ love of colourful tile in the ‘70s or flat beige hues of the early ‘aughts. When millennials led the surge of grey hues in the 2010s, the generation became accidentally associated with the colour.

But for millennial grey, it isn’t simply a case of yet another home trend—this shade took over. From farmhouse styles to new builds, paints to furnishings, grey became the new neutral.

That said, is 2025 marking the end of this reign?

Gen Z and interior designers on social media are posing the question of whether sage green, a cheerfully natural tone, is replacing the grey we’ve come to expect from young homeowners. Once surprising, green has entered the arena of commonplace neutrals.

While it's still up for debate, sage green is a timeless colour that can undoubtedly work with many different design styles (similar to grey). Paint your kitchen cabinets and island a soft shade, bring it into your bathroom backsplash, or welcome it onto your living room walls.

If you’re worried about it looking dated or boring, try to avoid pairing it with too many other similar neutrals, which can make your design look monotone, a criticism that greys and beiges frequently face.

Otherwise, go forth with your green-forward design! It's your home, after all.
