Between pollutant-heavy formulas, strong odours, and toxic ingredients, some of our favourite paints aren’t the healthiest. To help bring an environmentally conscious lens to the industry, paint company Alkemis Paint uses an all-natural mineral formula that’s better for us—and the planet.

Coined the world’s first wellness paint brand, Alkemis uses clear quartz as its formulaic foundation. Crystalline pigments and earth-derived minerals—including chromite and hematite—are then added to develop the brand’s signature hues, as opposed to synthetic pigments or chemical colourants.

The paints are free of hazardous organic pollutants, volatile organic compounds, preservatives, and other harmful substances. All products are 100 percent water vapour-permeable, helping to prevent mould and fungal growth.

The brand’s 100 percent emissions-free manufacturing process also helps support the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, as well as several other worldwide environmental standards programs.

Even better? The brand says that their paints can help improve the air quality inside your home.

Alkemis is one of the only Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Certified paints in North America, a designation which signifies its health and environmental safety. And while most paints emit harmful fumes while drying, Alkemis says that one gallon of its paint absorbs as much carbon dioxide as nine trees in a single day while curing.
