5 Design Mistakes That Keep Your Home From Feeling Relaxing

Make your home your personal sanctuary with our easy tips.

Your home can be anything you want it to be—your kids’ friends’ go-to hang-out spot, a productive workspace, or an entertainer’s dream. But most of all, it should be your haven.

To make your abode even more relaxing, there are a few decor mistakes you want to avoid.

How to make your home feel relaxing

1. Clutter

It’s true—there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Whether you’re a knick-knack collector or simply need to give your home a good purge, getting rid of clutter will make your home feel more organized and put-together. Plus, crossing cleaning off your to-do list allows your brain to relax in the way it desires.

2. Bad lighting

Hello, overhead lighting! Bright LEDs beaming down on your retinas is a surefire way to promote stress and tension. Opt for mood lighting in the form of tabletop and standing lamps, candles, and or consider adding a dimmer switch on ceiling lights.

3. Too much furniture

While there’s nothing wrong with an eclectic style, an overcrowded space is a chaotic one. Be intentional about leaving negative space in your design, both to let in light and give yourself room to move.

This means thinking about where you’re positioning your furniture. Pushing your couch against the wall might seem like it will give you more room, but leaving a few inches in between will actually make the space appear bigger. Keep an eye out for design tricks that make rooms look more spacious.

4. Too many (or not enough!) patterns

We’re all for pattern drenching—when done right. Too many conflicting designs can easily go from cohesive and playful to confusing. On the other hand, a dull design without any contrast looks more like a showroom than a home. Don’t be afraid to infuse your personal style into your home.

5. Uncomfortable furniture

It doesn’t matter how beautiful that velvet sofa is, if its straight back and hard edges are keeping you from sinking into it after a long day, it’s not worth it. Go for pieces—from your couch to dining chairs to your mattress—that are comfy, long-lasting, and stylish.
