Loud budgeting is the Internet's answer to quiet luxury

Loud budgeting is the trend that can help you reach your financial goals.

You're probably familiar with the term quiet luxury, a lifestyle characterized by understated elegance. Popularized in 2023, its appeal lies in the perception of exclusivity and discerning taste, foregoing overt displays of wealth in favour of niche and subtle ways to signal your status.

While the aesthetic itself is fun and exudes a minimalist charm, most of us don't come from generational wealth and don't have the means to cosplay as heirs (Anna Delvey-core, if we may). Thus, the growing frustration with this staged lack of transparency has led the Internet to come up with an answer: loud budgeting.

The exact opposite of quiet luxury, loud budgeting is a money-saving technique. It involves declining social opportunities if they have the potential to put a strain on your finances, or overspending on items that you don't truly need or that are too expensive (we don't actually need the Togo sofa, no matter how much of a design staple it is).

"Loud budgeting is about the everyday person," says TikTok user Lukas Battle. The idea is to empower people to feel more comfortable speaking up and prioritizing their financial goals. The trend also echoes the average person's growing concern about rising prices and de-stigmatizes the economic struggles we're all facing.

So, next time you see an expensive home decor item or new trend, don't be so quick to impulsively buy it. Instead, look for more affordable alternatives, such as second-hand items or good quality dupes. Your future self will thank you!
