How To Remove Oil And Grease Stains From Clothing
In the world of stains, oil and grease can feel like public enemy number one. Here are our top tips for getting rid of them.
Oil and grease are some of the trickiest stains to get out of clothes. These stains are resistant to water — per the classic chemical reaction between oil and water — and are easily held onto by common synthetic fibres, like polyester. To make matters worse, grease marks can get sealed into fabric with hot temperatures if you don’t notice them right away.
That said, all hope is not lost. Try these steps to remove the peskiest oil stains from your clothes and linens.
1. Act fast
The quicker you get to work on oil stains, the greater the likelihood of getting them out.
2. Blot excess grease
First, try to soak up any excess oil. Use a butter knife to scrape off stuck-on grease and a paper towel to blot liquids.
3. Apply baking soda
Next, apply baking soda (cornstarch or baby powder also work) to absorb the oil. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
Lightly brush off excess powder.
4. Use dish soap or a stain remover
Treat the stain with stain remover and allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes. If you don’t have a stain remover on hand, spot treat with dish soap or a heavy-duty laundry detergent.
Gently scrub the stain with a toothbrush or rub the fabric together with your fingers.
5. Wash in hot water
Finally, wash the stained item in the hottest water possible for the type of fabric. We suggest air drying the item before throwing it in the dryer to ensure that the stain is gone. Heat from the dryer will seal in stains, rendering you unable to remove them.
