A Renovation Expert Gives Us Her Best Tips For Transforming Every Room In Your House

Self-proclaimed "renovation addict" Daphné Morin gives us her best tips for a total home overhaul.

Even if you don't have the budget for major renovations, a few small, well-made changes can make a big difference.

Daphné Morning (@daphlive) shares her simple tips, room by room, to make your home warmer, more welcoming, and more functional.

5 details that make a big difference

1. Doors: Give your interior doors character by adding moldings or decorative details. A touch of paint can make all the difference: choose a different colour from the walls and even paint the moldings.

2. Finishes: Pay careful attention to the cutting of baseboards and frames, the installation, and especially the caulking—it's these finishes that give an impression of quality.

3. Hardware: Swap out overly standard handles for unique, more refined designs. This instantly changes the look of your cabinets and doors. If your home inspires an older look, install old handles found at the thrift store.

4. Window Dressings: Attach the poles approximately 10 to 15 cm from the window and leave at least 15 cm overhanging on each side. Choose panels that are wide enough (2 to 2.5 times the window width) and long enough to brush or break slightly on the floor.

5. Bulbs: Vary the temperature and power of the light depending on the room. The colour and size of the bulb play a major role in the ambiance and how it matches your lighting fixture.

4 Tips To Optimize Your Entryway

1. A Mirror: Much more useful than art in the entrance, it enlarges the space and allows for a final check before leaving.

2. Seating: Bench or pouf, a place to sit is always appreciated for putting on shoes.

3. A Pendant Light: It's eye-catching and adds a touch of sophistication to the entrance.

4. A Washable Rug: Practical and aesthetic!

7 Tips For Redoing Your Kitchen On A Small Budget

1. Handles: Switch yours out with personality-focussed ones. It's a quick and easy way to update or refine the style of a kitchen.

2. Add A Runner: Choose a short pile or vinyl rug; it’s visually appealing and also more comfortable for long tasks carried out on site.

3. Unexpected Decorative Objects: A frame, pretty cookbooks, or decorative tableware can add character to a space.

4. A Table Lamp: It brings a warm and friendly light into a space where you wouldn't expect it!

5. A Tray Of Essentials: Soap, sponge, brush—all in beautiful containers on a decorative tray near the sink.

6. Customize Your Island: With paint, micro-concrete, or moldings, your island can become a real centrepiece.

7. Backsplash: Made of ceramic or high-quality stickers, a beautiful backsplash can transform the feel of your kitchen.

How To Renovate Your Bathroom

1. Finishings: Pay attention to details: clean tile joints, neat caulking, and coordinated accessories. Adding a backsplash behind the sink is both a practical and aesthetic touch.

2. Lighting: Replace basic wall lights with more designer models or add a ceiling light.

3. Your Bath Mat: Opt for a textured, machine-washable mat that adds comfort while enhancing the style of the room.

4. Open Shelving: Display rolled towels, candles, or a few well-chosen skincare products for a look that instantly reads, "put together."

5. A Mirror with Storage: Practical and elegant, it instantly modernizes the space.

6. Matching Accessories: Soap dish, dispenser, tumbler... Replace plastic models with ceramic, glass or metal versions for a more sophisticated finish.

7. Your Shower Curtain: If you have a bathtub, choose a curtain with a chic pattern or unique texture. Opt for elegant hooks to complete the look.

8. Room Fragrances: Scented candles, reed diffusers, or subtly diffused essential oils can transform your morning routine into a moment of relaxation.

4 Tips For Decorating Your Bedroom

1. Avoid Matching Furniture: It can make a room feel impersonal. Mix shapes, textures, and colours while maintaining a sense of visual unity.

2. Your Bed Coverings: Also avoid sets, choose fabrics with varied textures for a more personalized effect!

3. Lighting: Use multiple light sources (night lights, reading lights, ceiling lights) to create the perfect ambiance for the time of day.

4. Your Headboard: A bedroom element that shouldn't be overlooked for a cozy look. Whether wood or fabric, any idea is good for framing a bed. Also, don't neglect the back wall, where you can add texture.

How To Update Your Backyard Or Garden

1. Create A Relaxation Area: Add a bench, hammock, or small table to enjoy the warm weather.

2. A Point Of Shade: Without necessarily building a pergola, add plants, a privacy wall or shade sails to enjoy the outdoors comfortably even in the middle of the day.

3. The BBQ Area: Setting up an outdoor kitchen is easier than you think. While you're planning your dream space, start cooking outdoors by installing a handy cart to transport food and chop your favourite ingredients outdoors.

4. No Waste: Add potted plants that you could bring indoors in the fall.

5. Light Sources: What's better than different light sources to set the mood? Vary the sources with solar-powered or rechargeable battery-powered lights.
