Inside a Colour-Drenched Home In The Kawartha Lakes Inspired by Nature

Nestled in Fenelon Falls—a small community in Ontario’s cottage country—it’s only fitting that this cozy home took design cues from its natural surroundings.

“Our client wasn’t afraid of colour, so we opted for soft hues to maintain a warm and inviting space,” says Coralee Monaghan, owner and lead designer of Coralee Monaghan Interiors. “A palette of blues and greens flows throughout the home, and since the home is located in a rural area surrounded by trees, we used that as our inspiration.”

The three-bedroom home is soft and inviting, creating a distinct atmosphere that borders the line between elegance and excess. Floor-to-ceiling windows contrast with rich colour drenching; deep hues are paired with natural textures, and patterns abound.

The living room, with its bright windows and vaulted ceiling, is a celebration in dynamic design. Custom green velvet sofas anchor the space, complementing the soft green wainscotting along the back wall and botanical chaises.

“We integrated earth tones and natural materials, such as wood grain furniture, along with textural elements like rattan,” says the Orillia, Ont.-based designer. This is expressed through luscious beige curtains, a rich wood cabinet, and tailored stools.

The cohesive green paint that envelops the living area continues into the dining room, creating a visual connection between the spaces.

“Our client envisioned this area as a place for entertaining and hosting casual dinner parties, requesting that her existing dining table be integrated into the design,” says Monaghan.

The burgundy and brass chandelier grounds the table, while earth-toned artwork infuses whimsy.

Soft and seamless was key for the primary. “Staying true to earth tones and natural elements, we chose wallpaper that aligns with this theme, while the bedding is crafted from organic materials like linen and cotton,” says Monaghan.

Soothing blue is woven throughout the wall details, bedding, and custom bench.

The two guest bedrooms mimic the relaxing environment of the primary, with a few colourful tweaks.

A rich blue palette colour drenches the first space. “Since it faces north, we embraced the limited light to cultivate a moody atmosphere,” says Monaghan.

The dark cherry wood found in the second bedroom’s existing dresser and the nightstands were the foundation of this room’s update.

“To complement these pieces, we chose a palette of butter yellow and aubergine,” explains the designer. “Additionally, the custom floral pillows introduce that natural element to this space as well.”
