The 6 Renovations Homeowners Regret The Most
Not every project is worth the investment.
Your home is your design playground. Get creative, lean into the styles you love, and personalize it to your heart’s content.
However, there are some renovations that might not be worth sinking your savings into—especially if you ever plan on selling your home.
These are the renovations homeowners regret the most.
1. Marble countertops
Ah, marble—the most beautifully porous material out there. Marble is soft, making it susceptible to soaking up spills and stains. Heartier materials, such as quartz, are easier to clean in the long term.
2. Dark wood floors
There’s something undoubtedly elegant about dark hardwood floors, but they carry a few caveats. The dark material can be prone to showing dust, scratches, and scuffs, making it a tough option for family and pet-friendly homes.
3. Light coloured carpet
Wall-to-wall carpeting is generally on the outs with designers, but light coloured carpets can be particularly regrettable. Stains and marks show up easily in the fibres. If you’re set on a light hued rug, go for one that’s machine-washable for easy cleaning.
4. Trendy tiles
Tiles—whether on your backsplash or floors—are a wonderful way to personalize your home. However, like any home reno, if you lean too trendy, they can quickly look dated. Opt for something more classic, such as zellige tiles.
5. Converting the garage
This one is a bit of a toss-up. Converting this space into a home gym or office is a great opportunity to repurpose an underused room. That said, if you plan to sell your home, future buyers might be less interested in a house sans garage.
6. Doorless showers
Doorless showers may look sleek, but they have a tendency to get messy. Go for a walk-in shower with a small step to keep the water in and a glass door to prevent spray.
