The primary bedroom features an original – and amazing – ceiling cove. “It definitely cried out for a real showstopper of a chandelier!” says designer Lauren woods. The rest of the room is more subdued with gentle touches, such as bouclé storage stools, natural bedding and a wall of linen drapes.

“We wanted to have fun here,” says designer Janice King-Smith of the second-floor guest room’s bold botanical wallpaper. The tropical plants, rattan pendant and wood-and-white scheme reinforce the coastal vibe. “The window above the bed is new and adds a tremendous amount of natural light.

Pastoral views from the primary bedroom make it a sweet spot for waking. Amanda fashioned a deepset sill for the window. “It can be used as a vanity, a desk or, like this, for display,” she says. The woven lounge chair isn’t far from an equally laid-back bouclé stool. “The bed frame is a rich, beautiful acacia wood. It has gorgeous knots and a live edge. I love its depth of colour against the white wall,” says the homeowner. The shapely contemporary white lighting and bedside tables are counterpoints to the whisper-soft bedding. Who wouldn’t want a little quiet time here?

“The owner wanted the principal bedroom to flow with the rest of the condo, but have a more neutral and calming palette when it came to furnishings and art,” says the designer. The interesting pendant light is in keeping with the dining area’s fixture, and its caned panels subtly reference the dining chairs. It fills the upper space nicely, without being overpowering. The bed, fully upholstered in bouclé, has a cozy presence, while the swing-arm sconces introduce some midcentury-mod style. Artwork hung just above the bed is in keeping with the low-profile furnishings.

In her daughter Tamara’s bedroom, the designer took inspiration from the artwork. “I loved the woolly look of the animals, and my father had an alpaca farm, so I thought this would bring back great memories for Tamara,” she says. The choice informed the fun textural rug and the nubby upholstery on the armchairs and ottomans.

The primary bedroom, which didn’t have a closet, was renovated into a three-room suite brought together by distinctive archways. A bedroom across the hall became the closet, and the open hallway leading to it was enclosed to create a private seating area. The home’s original dark hardwood floors were refinished in a blond shade that feels light and airy, and its pale tones are echoed in the custom archways’ trim. “I would put archways in every room if I could. I just love them,” says the homeowner. “They helped create an open, cohesive suite that’s become a little retreat for us.” The focal-wall treatment continues here with vertical wainscotting on a black wall that’s adorned with a natural oak shelf that Malcon made.

“It was important that Michelle had a comfortable chair in her bedroom,” says Jenny. “A place where she could read and relax while still having a view of the lake.” The room’s neutral palette has earthy heft, and there’s a balance of hard wood and soft elements. The artwork over the bed was purchased by the owners in Italy.

This bedroom, nestled on the wooded side of the cottage, gains extra coziness from slanted eaves and soft neutral tones; the daybed (opposite the bed) pulls out, making it great for a child staying with parents. The painting is by Corky Davis, a family friend.

“I focused on beautiful rich colours and patterns,” designer Madison Krofchick says. The new bedding feels at home in the vintage setting, and the contemporary pendant draws the eye to the plush sleeping area.

The primary bedroom surprises with an untraditional choice of material. “The owner isn’t a fan of soft, upholstered headboards and I wanted the room to have the same presence as the rest of the space, so I chose a slab of marble similar to that in the kitchen and living room,” says designer Lindsey Levy. By night, it warmly reflects the bedside sconces, and during the day, the light from floor-to-ceiling windows. The organic shape of the chandelier is a wavy counterpoint to the marble and is reminiscent of clouds.

Rest Easy

The bespoke slatted white oak wall – uplit behind the bed – is especially romantic at night when it glows, and it also adds textural interest. “We matched the night stands from Article to the wall, so everything felt custom,” says designer Nicci Harrison. The room, which closes off with a sliding glass door, is swathed in creamy-coloured floor-to-ceiling blackout drapes that wrap the room for a cocooning sleep at night and to keep it cool during the day. “The room gets blasted with sun,” says Nicci.

A brand-new third story was added to the house during the renovation, and that entire floor is dedicated to the primary suite. The monochromatic space features warm taupe walls and ceilings; the velvet headboard is in the same hue as the finewale corduroy drapes. Using a drop lamp for bedside lighting is a space saver. Large works of art hang above the dresser.

As an ode to his clients’ love of travel, designer Jack Creasy papered the primary bedroom in a whimsical heron-print pattern inspired by the beauty of the Amazon rainforest. Jack happily complemented it with pink walls. “I don’t believe in the stereotype that men don’t like pink,” he says. “We have many male clients who’ve agreed to all-pink rooms and love them!” Mismatched nightstands – one with drawers for extra storage, the other acts as a makeup table – are brought together with bedside lamps. “Their slope-shouldered silhouettes, reminiscent of Chinese plum vases, and the ivory linen shades link the two otherwise different nightstands,” says Jack. Textured cushions and bedding lend a relaxed boho feel.

art from the owners’ collection is mixed with vintage and fine art prints; the pieces sing against newly painted walls. “The room was a pretty blue green, but the colour was dark and cold for the north-facing space. A warm white, which the owner had used elsewhere in the house, works so much better,” says designer Samantha Pynn. The stunning fabric at the window has a whimsical print filled with animals of all sorts; bedding in soft tones and a wool rug add subtle texture.

The entire third floor serves as a just-for-me suite for the owner. (The second floor houses guest rooms and another bath.) In the bedroom, oak-panelled walls offer a warm and restful counterpoint to the room’s huge windows. Oat- meal draperies and heavily textured bedding are paired with articulating lights. “They’re perfect for reading in bed,” says designer Alison Connor.

“I like to say the daughter has the best bedroom in the house because its huge windows overlook the backyard,” says designer Stephanie Charest. “We designed that window seat so she could make the most of the view.” The room’s furnishings, drapes and wool rug are intentionally neutral. “We wanted her to be able to choose accents in any colour she likes, then change her mind with- out changing the furniture,” says Stephanie. “That same logic was used for the shelving unit near the bed. She can create displays, then change them on a whim.”

Expansive windows on two walls are softened with embroidered floral drapery that Victoria chose for its subtle pattern and creamy champagne hues. “One of my all-time favourite fabrics is Colefax & Fowler’s Bowood, which I chose for the bed’s cushions,” says designer Victoria McKenney. “It ties in so well with the champagne tones and adds a fresh green energy to the room.” She found the chandelier in an antique shop and knew she had to have it when she discovered it was made in 1912, the same year the house was built.
