A Timeless Kitchen Reno In Vancouver That Reconnects With Its Heritage Past
An old-world transformation made this kitchen truly feel like the heart of this Vancouver, B.C., abode.
Though the creative briefing of this kitchen reno was technically “farmhouse chic with Spanish influence,” the idea of connection was undoubtedly at the forefront of the project.
“Unlike many renovations where clients want the home to feel entirely new, these clients already loved the style of the rest of their home and simply wanted the kitchen to feel like it had always belonged,” says Ashley de Boer, founder and principal designer with Ashley de Boer Interiors.
While the original kitchen certainly had charm of its own, with hints of exposed brick and plenty of natural light, it didn’t quite mesh with the rest of the 1927-era home’s classic character.
“We wanted the space to look and feel as though it had always been there, honouring the past while introducing modern functionality and quiet elegance,” says de Boer.

The range hood—an instant eye-catcher finished in hand-troweled Venetian plaster—was designed to be a focal point. It’s one of the first things visitors spot not only in the kitchen, but upon entering the home through the front door.
“It’s sculptural, textural, and feels historic, like it’s always belonged,” says de Boer.
The warmth and organic vibe of the plaster brings an “old-world” influence to the space that plays into the home’s historic nature. Its creamy, matte finish complements the rich wood cabinetry and crisp Calacatta Macaubas stone.

The old-timey touches don’t stop there. Vintage-inspired pendant lights hang over the island, while brass hardware adds a lived-in feel.
By knocking down a divider wall that previously blocked the kitchen from the patio door, the farmhouse–style sink has plenty of useful cooking space surrounding it.

A delight for entertaining, this kitchen also prioritizes function. Clever storage solutions—including a magic corner, spice and oil pull-outs, and drawer organizers—make the space a breeze to use.
“The new design encourages a seamless connection between the kitchen and surrounding living areas as well as the patio, making it equally suited for quiet meals and lively gatherings,” says de Boer. “While it serves the two of them now as they host friends and family, it was also thoughtfully planned to support their lifestyle should they choose to grow their family in the future.”
