One Strategic Living Room Layout Change Completely Transformed This Family Home
Thoughtful curations and warm touches abound in this Freelton, Ont., home.
After living in their abode for years, the homeowners were craving a design refresh. “[They wanted] something sophisticated enough for entertaining but still durable and comfortable for their three kids and dog,” says designer Staci Edwards.
A warm, welcoming palette was a must, as well as beautiful but still practical materials. The house is marked by eye-catching light fixtures, a touch of quirky textiles—such as fringe stools in the living room and wallpaper on the home office ceiling—and a resoundingly timeless style.
Most of this is thanks to Edwards’ pared-back (but never boring) approach. Plus, one very strategic layout shift.

“One of the biggest design decisions was relocating the fireplace,” says Edwards, the creative director of Staci Edwards Design. Originally embedded into the back wall between the two curved windows, the placement blocked natural light, views to the garden and pool, and “limited the layout.”
The designer moved the fireplace to the long side wall, adding a natural stone surrounding for texture and complementary wood beams along the ceiling. New windows brightened up the room even further.
“Now the husband has been known to walk into the living room, point at the window and fireplace, and shout ‘game changer!’” says Edwards.

The kitchen is a celebration of warm neutrals, layered textures, and elegant stone. Custom cabinetry and an oversized island infuse practicality, making entertaining a breeze. Brass accents nod to vintage styles.

“Calm and timeless” is the theme of the primary bedroom and ensuite. Beautifully delicate lighting, including a draped chandelier in the bedroom and a bubble-style fixture over the bath, invites personalization into the spaces.

With plenty of built-in storage and a sleek glass-panelled door, the office is innately inviting, but the star of the show is undoubtedly the wallpapered ceiling.
“I love using subtle ‘wow’ moments that don’t overpower the overall design,” explains Edwards. The pattern adds fun visual interest, “but the palette is neutral enough to flow with the rest of the home.”
In contrast, the family’s shared desk area leans into the bold end of the home's colour palette. “It needed to be both functional and beautiful, so we used a deep blue to ground the space and create a tailored, built-in look that feels intentional and elegant,” says Edwards.
