These Sunrooms Will Fill You With Cozy, Light-Filled Warmth

Dreamy and nature-wrapped

This nature-wrapped space is in the main 1,400-square-foot cottage. Designer Madison Krofchick chose brick-veneer floor tiles to impart a charming, almost antique feel. The wrought-iron furniture came with the property, and Madison updated its old green leather cushions with fresh, unfussy white ones.

“We think this room was once a balcony that was enclosed and that’s why there’s original raw cedar ceilings. We decided to leave them, as they add such warmth,” says homeowner and designer Victoria McKenney. A contemporary ceiling light, found online, fosters the eclectic look.

Cozy family cottage

With the original dropped ceiling removed, the peaked ceiling and beams are exposed to stunning effect. “It lends the illusion of space, even though the square footage is really minimal,” says cottage owner Erin McLaughlin. “It also helps to circulate air.”

island haven

The west-facing screened porch is big enough for both dining and sitting areas. Designer Laura Hay says that the family practically lives in this space all summer. She found the old folding dining table at a thrift store and refurbished it; it hails from a local Royal Canadian Legion Hall.

The Green Room

Hello, city sunroom! Hanging lanterns picked up on a trek to Thailand draw a dramatic focus to the black ceiling where natural and artificial vegetation are woven into the custom wire mesh. “I’m an outdoor girl who loves nature. This room reflects this aspect of my personality,” says designer and homeowner Roxane Joly. “There is no TV. It’s more of a place to have a drink and chat.”

“It’s maybe counterintuitive to paint a sunroom such a dark colour, but the room gets so much sun that the dark makes things pop!”

The indoor-outdoor feel of the condo is extended to a sunroom off the master bedroom thanks to garden-like furnishings like the lanterns and woven armchair. The space is ideal for yoga with the Coast Mountains providing a peaceful backdrop to Vancouver’s downtown.

Warm Glow

The main-floor sunroom takes its design cue from more traditional cottages and was lined with cedar to give it a warm glow. “When the sun sets, this room has the most beautiful atmosphere,” says designer Sascha LaFleur. “The use of flowy linens, slouchy cushions, reclaimed wood and iron are repeated from the other spaces so there is continuity."
