Before & After: Opening Up a Closed-Off Kitchen for Better Flow

See how designer Melissa Ta infuses inviting minimalism into this token ‘90s-style kitchen.

The number one goal of the reno hinged on opening the kitchen up into the dining area. “The clients love having friends and family over, so creating a space that felt open, welcoming, and easy to gather in was a big priority,” says Ta, founder and leader designer with TA Designs.

Removing the wall between the two spaces instantly made them feel brighter and more connected. That said, “what stood out most was how completely the atmosphere changed without doing a full layout overhaul,” says Ta.

She used soft textures, natural materials, and simple details to bring her clients’ Japandi vision to life.

A custom range hood wrapped in a rounded plaster adds a “soft, sculptural feel” to the space. Taj Mahal quartz countertops envelop the kitchen while warm hues adorn the cabinets.

As a bonus, the fridge is now tucked away around the corner, fulfilling the clients' wishes for ample room to cook and entertain.
