Jillian Harris's top 8 design and decor trends

Design and style guru Jillian Harris dishes on the best design trends this year for spring.

Springtime is synonymous with rebirth so it's the perfect time to reimagine your home and add some new life to it! If you're looking to shake things up this season, we've got some ideas to help. We checked in with Jillian Harris, designer, style maven and host of HGTV's Love It or List It Vancouver, to find out what's on point right now. "I like to keep my spaces timeless and classic," she says. "However, believe it or not, I've been moving away from the all-neutral and white category and think it's still possible to have a bold, colourful space that is still timeless." So, what design details are making her happy this spring? Read on to find out!

1 Non-white kitchens

When it comes to kitchens, the heart of the home, cabinets painted in pops of blues, greens and greys are hot. But the look Jillian is absolutely loving? Black! "I'm loving black kitchens these days with beautiful thick white marble," she says. "Or dark marble, composite or wood countertops, instead of the safe white countertops. Black framed windows (even throughout the house) gives a home a traditional New York vibe that I love! I'm also loving thick marble countertops with natural wood cabinetry and gold hardware," she says.

"Don't shy away from a bold patterned wallpaper in the bathroom," says Jillian, "along with a beautiful black framed shower frame!"

3 Rustic floors

Add a touch of modern farmhouse chic to your home with Jillian's favourite flooring right now: Wide-planked, rustic hardwood. She also loves to get creative and suggests wallpapering stair rises "for a unique look that complements your flooring."

4 Look-at-me lighting

In the kitchen, Jillian loves the look of oversized pendants hung over the kitchen island but in the bedroom and dining room, she suggests beaded chandeliers that have a nostalgic feeling. "I'm still a sucker for a vintage light fixture or chandelier though," she says. "I feel like that will never go away!"

5 Lots of colour

Paint colours have been notoriously neutral for many years now but springtime is the perfect time of year to play with colour.  "I think we will see more colour this year," says Jillian. "Some of my favourites are Nimbus, Smoke, Winter's Eve, Athabasca and Hannah Banana from Benjamin Moore."

6 Mixed prints

"Don't be afraid to mix and match patterns when it comes to decor pillows and throws," says Jillian. "I have a gingham print wallpaper in my spare bathroom which I love and I also feel that a blush pink gingham wallpaper in a child's room is adorable! Also, don't shy away from wall decals, big and small! These are easy to peel and stick yourself!"

7 Whimsical flower arrangements and foliage

"I love white and soft pink peonies, ranunculus and simply greenery such as eucalyptus and ruscus," says Jillian. "The messier and more natural looking the arrangement, the better!"

8 Bud vases

How do you make your tabletop look on point this season? Jillian suggests bud vases and milk bottles with a few stems, each placed sporadically down the middle of the table, along with clear and silver metallic candle votives.
